The Hands Mosaic Project is a continuation of my projects surrounding hands and gestures dating back to some of my earliest drawing (graphite) examinations pre art school. I wanted to abstract the hand more than in previous work I have done while still looking at collections and the act of collecting. Each piece in the Hands Mosaic Project, while only seconds long, is made up of thousands of individual digital photographs. I composed frames, made up of single hand gestures.  Hands, equally expressive as eyes, could become the fantastic forms of animals in amazing performances seen in nature.

The Hands Mosaic Project can be seen as a commentary on man’s need to control nature, or to understand it, or to imitate it.  In my case, I hope simply to look at it.  Also, a return to childhood ideas, making a shadow puppet in the form of a bird with your hands; who hasn’t done that?  My earliest serious attempt at representational drawing was of a panther walking (which my father still proudly displays).  Formally, it is a new type of animation, at least one I haven’t seen before, a mix of pixilation (not to be confused with the digital artifact) and a mural technique using a grid over the image to translate a smaller image on to a much larger surface. All and all, I am abstracting hands to represent animal motions in endless loops.
