Rice Series
My father frequently encouraged me to finish all the rice in my bowl, saying that in each bowl of rice there was the sweat of a thousand farmers. Each of these pieces begins with a grouping of small similar grain/seed objects. These objects are not intended to be literal grains of rice, but rather represent something precious, a beginning point of meditation that anchors the rest of the work. Though meditative, the drawings are also playful, an attempt at the spontaneous filtration of thought and mark making through brush and ink.
