Ryoko Suzuki photography
Ryoko Suzuki's large scale, hyper-life like color photographs call to attention the sexual stereotype Japanese society, and it's "Power's that Be" place upon it's youth.
In her current series, Anikora Seifuku (uniforms), Suzuki positions herself in the roll of "the Doll", by placing her head on the sexualized figures that Japanese toy makers produce for Japanese children. The anime-girl type-toys are popularized in advertising and cartoon/animation.
The towering photographs, show the glistening body, provocative clothing and stereotyped roles of the anime-toys. Suzuki superimposes her head, styled to match the figure on the toy. The result is a massive figure, provocative and alluring. You feel guilty looking at it, and you should.
Oddly enough, people are finding these images more "sexual" than her previous "Anikora" (nude) work.
The thought that this is what toy makers wish to promote to the Japanese youth culture is alarming. The molds the 'Powers that Be" are imposing, through animation and anatomically robust action figures, while a cultural norm is a bit off base and requires a bit of watching.
